Nesthetic’s 12 Days of Holiday Decluttering & Organizing

From Dec 11 to Dec 24, join us in our 12 Days of Decluttering & Organizing, a quick and easy challenge to help get your house ready for the holidays!

Day 1

Preparation

Grab a box for donations, a box for recycling, and trash bags. Label the boxes and put in a central location for easy access over the next 11 days. Now is also good time to make a detailed list of your menu and shopping list for your holiday visitors. (Pro Tip: Have a donation box handy year-round, encouraging you to think twice about keeping those duplicate+ items 😊)

Day 1

Preparation

Day 2

Tableware

Identify all serving-ware you plan to use over the Holidays, remove and clean. This includes serving platters, bowls, China, candlesticks, silverware, and the like, that will be used for your holiday dinner. While you’re at it, donate any mismatched, chipped, or unused hosting items from storage.

Day 3

Pantry

Throw away all expired items in your pantry and cross-reference your shopping list to remove any items you have in stock. If you’re feeling really motivated, utilize bins to combine items and store cans on steps so you can see to the back of the shelf. (Pro Tip: ‘Best by’ dates are not ‘expiration dates.’ This article has a great chart to show you (in some cases, years) that you can safely eat your pantry items after the date is printed.)

Day 4

Spices

Spices lose their “umph” quickly even when stored securely. It’s suggested to replace your spices yearly for the best flavor. There’s no better time than now to grab new ones to make your dishes sing. Focus on combining duplicates, tossing those expired, and getting them in one location. We love using bulk spices (which are SOOOOO inexpensive if you are lucky enough to have a grocer who offers them) and this amazing spice rack that will fit in a drawer.

Day 5

Fridge & Freezer

Take a look at your refrigerator + freezer and parse through food items that are expired (we all have them) or you’re never going to use. You know you’ll need that room for cooking prep and leftovers! (Pro Tip: Utilizing freezer baskets will help keep your frozen goods organized and eliminate double-purchasing.)

Fridge & Freezer

Day 6

Car

Whether road tripping to visit family, or becoming a short-term pseudo Uber driver for family coming to town, it’s time to get that car ready to roll. Clear your car of trash and anything that doesn’t actually belong there. Grab that trash bag and a bin for things that don’t belong, and don’t forget your center console, door cubbies, and those pockets behind your seats! (Pro Tip: This vacuum changed our car-cleaning lives.)

Day 7

Toys + Games

It’s time to pare down toys and games to create space for new ones to come! Some tips when it comes to toys… DO a first pass before enlisting the kids. DO involve the kids in the process. DO sort the toys into manageable piles BEFORE kids review. (Pro Tip: DO make paring-down of toys a pleasurable time for the kids. We also suggest using this time to introduce charity discussions, and the importance of brightening up the Holidays for those who may not have toys this season.)

Day 7

Toys + Games

Day 8

Catch Up

Take a break! Catch up on any tasks from the first week that you may not have had a chance to finish. Along with a long nap, hit your shopping list, and don’t forget to take the turkey out of the freezer!

Day 8

Catch Up

Day 9

Paper

Between holiday cards, coupons, Amazon deliveries, and bills, there is A LOT of paper coming in daily. If you have an “I’ll get to this later” stack, it’s time to sort it! In addition to delivered items, take today to focus on WRAPPING paper. Make sure any last-minute gifts are buttoned up and ready to go under the tree. (Pro Tip: Take some time to enroll in paperless billing.)

Day 9

Paper

Day 10

Guest Rooms

Take today to run through guest bedroom closets and donate anything that no longer serves you. A good goal is to create enough space for your guests to hang their clothes and empty folded items into a space all their own. (Pro Tip: Be sure to leave out extra pillows and blankets, and set up a phone charger in every guest room.)

Day 10

Guest Rooms

Day 11

Coat Closet

Use today to parse through your jackets and coats, donating those you no longer wear. This will ensure your guests see not only a beautiful coat closet, but have space to add theirs upon arrival. While you’re at it, run through all your purses and bags, and clear the clutter! Empty out EVERYTHING (rubber bands, hair clips, that lip gloss you’ve been looking for, all of it!), sort and only put items back in the ONE handbag you are currently using.

Day 12

Give

It’s time to address that donation box (or hopefully now boxES!) you started on Day 1. We’re all for listing items for sale to help our clients recoup on what can be an expensive time of the year. For those who’d like to donate, we highly encourage donations to be made to foundations and organizations that benefit directly from the donation of your items. We have a great list of charities accepting items in “Our Commitment to the Planet” section on Nesthetichome.com.
